Thinking aloud: Can Leadership and Management be taught?
The Handbook of Security by Martin Gill : the book that changed my mindset
In 2008 I was accepted onto the Foundation Degree in Security & Risk Management.
This was a big thing for me as I had no qualifications from school and had to make a case of why I should be given a place - at that stage I had been a security contractor in Iraq for 3 years
I never pass my books on. I revisit them to reflect on my new perceptions based on experience
Today, as I prepare to head to Somalia, Dubai and Oman to undertake Security, H&S, Quality and Environmental audits, it makes me smile to re-read one of my favourite Chapters ‘Management’.
It has been 15 years since first reading Professor Joshua Bamfield view on the importance of Security Managers undertaking security audits, and about terms like ‘threats & opportunities’ with regard for risk - my experience in that time is that security audits aren’t often done outside of the requirement by certifications like ISO. Many Security Managers and even Security Directors simply don’t do them.
Reflection … I am now a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management … I have Level 7 Qualifications … I have experience of leading those within PCR Global Limited, & continuous involvement in the operations and strategies of other companies. Does it mean I think I’m Billy Big Balls? Absolutely not! I learn every day … my learning will end when I end. I know I don’t know what I don’t know.
So, can Leadership and Management be taught?
For ME, and this is ME/My Own opinions … Yes, in most cases and to a certain degree
BUT, it’s up to the individual if they are open to it, if they care enough about the reasons behind it, and if they are motivated towards it.
My Father never verbally taught me about Leadership, his work ethic did. The courses I have since completed and books I have read have helped me identify it … and for that I am very grateful
Note to self**
Our mindset can lead us where we want to go, or where we don’t want to go. Who we chose to have in our private and working lives will also impact our direction.
When it gets too much, just take a knee.
